How will Spurs fare this season?

After Tottenham’s amount of spending in past transfer windows, it comes a surprise that Spurs haven’t bought anyone of real substance yet.

Yes, they have signed Brad Friedel from Aston Villa to give Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini some much-needed competition but manager Harry Redknapp hasn’t exactly splashed the cash like he has done in the past.

Big money was spent bringing in Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Rafael van der Vaart to White Hart Lane was splashed in previous windows but this summer he has been quiet so far.

Rumours that Lassana Diarra from Spanish side Real Madrid could return to the Premier League may become apparent in the coming days, with Spurs set to bid for the midfielder.

However, much of the speculation around Tottenham in the close season has been the departure of key players. The on-going transfer saga with Luka Modric has maybe stalled Redknapp’s plans to attract new players knowing he may have to replace the Croatian midfielder if he leaves to join London rivals Chelsea.

Other players linked with a move away, something those regularly placing a free bet should take a note of, are striker Peter Crouch and midfielder Wilson Palacios. Both have been subject to a bid from Stoke, while Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlychenko could depart.

As Redknapp has stated in the past, Tottenham need to add new quality signings to the players they have already got if they are regain Champions League football and finally prepare for an assault on the Premier League title.

Gareth Bale’s interest has been minimal this summer and Rafael van der Vaart has signalled his intention to stay at the club which will be a real bonus for the Tottenham faithful.

Those placing free bets on the new season note how Spurs are likely to be boosted by the presence of England right-back Kyle Walker, who has done nothing but impress since going on loan to Aston Villa, QPR and Leicester in recent seasons.

Spurs have been linked to a host of signings with Villarreal striker Guiseppe Rossi, former Roma forward Marco Vucinic, England and West Ham midfielder Scott Parker and Blackburn defender Christopher Samba mentioned.

Spurs still have got a talented squad and plenty of top-class players to upset a lot of teams this season but, until they add to their squad with big money signings, they will get left behind by their closest rivals, big-spending Manchester City and Liverpool, who have been lively in the market since Kenny Dalglish took over the reigns at Anfield.

  1. Good article, but Spurs don’t need to spend too much like liverpool and city to get into that top4 again.
Breaking News is that we have signed Adebayor on loan. Hopefully Hulk, Ruiz and Diarra will follow and Crouch, Palacios, Gio, Bassong, Hutton and Keane will leave.
Levy be smart we got a whole extra week before our next match- hearts sign smartly and keep the trophies coming to this side of north london. COYS!

  2. Fans forget that the team we have now finished in the top 4. Last season we missed King, Dawson, Defoe, Palacios and Huddlestone for long periods of time and they were pivitol in us finishing 4th. We have an amazing squad and with a few quality additions we could be title contenders. We have about 2 weeks left in the transfer window and i believe we will bring in players but we have a big squad and players do have to leave before others can come in. I would like to see Benzema, Diarra and Ruiz come in but maybe thats just wishful thinking but i believe whoever Levy and Harry bring in they will help us get back into the top 4 and maybe help us win the Europa League or FA Cup!COYS!

  3. i fear for us this season. We have signed no one of any use our strikers are poor and our manager has no tactical ability at all. If harry thought last season was our best then he will be happy just finish is the top 6 this season!!! He is a small club manager and just doesnt know how to run a big club which needs champion league football.

  4. Yes these late Arrivals got us 5th Pienaar Van these loaned out players helped us get fourth Bentley and Rose goal of the season.. We could still get in the top with not a penny spent or loaned players because City would want Lennon or Bale in return we should keep away from them . Liverpool have spent nearly 100 million and they where already in 20 million trading dept are you telling me Bentley Keane Dosantos Hutton Crouch Kranjcar Jenas Pav are worse than Henderson Charlie 500,000 Adams Downing who had the benefit of Walker behind him Enrique Carroll Suares and by all accounts we are selling these and in terms of there premier states they are just has good if not there equals.. So my argument is this when the new rules kick in proper next season all clubs over 40 million in trading dept will be banned from transfers and out of the Wembley bound Champions league this is one rumour coming from France my son in law drives plattini round in his Merc and he heard him saying at least four clubs will have transfer bans and three teams will be omitted from the champs cup and there names will remain in my head with all the other shite , okay the last bit is made up but it sounds good.

  5. Good article. The bit about Spurs being left behind by their rivals is very accurate. There can be little doubt that as an also-ran side, really just making up the numbers for a TV audience focused on the bigger, better teams, Spurs are basically mere fodder. Yes, they’ll win some big games (like Sunderland winning 3-0 at Stamford Bridge last season), but basically the club is in decline and under the rodent-like Levy are doomed to remain insignificant in terms of Premier League competitiveness. We must remember that in the entire history of the Premiership, Spurs have won no more titles than Crystal Palace or Blackpool. Indeed, zero is the EXACT SAME NUMBER of titles won by Sid’s Deli Sunday League side that plays on Hackney Marshes. So, I agree with your article entirely.
