Our youngsters will be given a chance in the Europa Conference League

This evening, Nuno Espirito Santo has proudly stated that Dane Scarlett will start in the Europa Conference League playoff against Pacos de Ferreira.

As you all know, Scarlett was involved during pre-season, finding the back of the net in the 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient. He also appeared on the bench against City.

Scarlett has signed his first professional contract with us back in March, after a productive campaign for the Under-18s and Under-23s. In my Match Preview for the Pacos’ game, I hinted that he might make an appearance, which now seems the case. The Conference League will undoubtedly be a fantastic opportunity for the club’s youngsters to get first-team football under their belt. But not only for Scarlett, but also Alfie Devine as well, and others if picked.

Nuno has said that he has been impressed by what he has seen of Scarlett so far and stated that he and his coaching staff see excellent prospects for our players who play under our Tottenham academy’s banner. He said, concerning Scarlett (reported by Football.London): “He’s going to start the game tomorrow. We have big, big expectations regarding Dane because he did so well in pre-season which you recall the game against Leyton Orient in which he scored, and he was involved in many of the games in pre-season. He’s a young talent that we want to develop, and we want to make him better and want to make him grow because there’s a lot of potential there. I think it should be our idea in the club to use opportunities for young players to play. When we have talent, we must believe in them and go for it.”

Thoughts

It is always great to see new talent coming through, however, our main objective should be to make sure we win trophies and get high up the league table as possible. If they (youngsters) can be fitted in, all well and good; on the other hand, Nuno’s primary focus must be getting the right team together to challenge for everything going.

What concerns me is that Levy would rather get his managers/ coaches to focus on his academy players, than winning trophies, as this is – to him – the cheapest option to getting players than forking out vast amounts of money, like Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, United and City do (even though they actually win trophies… while we watch on the sidelines).

Be safe, Glenn
